Here is a summary of the two projects from Bolton Council Highways Department
School Road Safety Sign Cleaning Project One:
The Local Authority invested a significant amount of money in 2017 to install Advisory 20mph speed limit signs and hazard warning lights outside schools on our main roads. This is in an effort to reduce vehicle speeds outside schools which is still subject to a 30 or 40mph speed limit. By reducing vehicle speeds we help protect our vulnerable road users and reduce the risk of collisions.
Over time these signs have become dirty to the point of being unreadable and in some cases covered in vegetation and can’t be seen at all. To combat this and to bring the signs back to life and protect our asset we have appointed a local specialist cleaning contractor to clean and improve the visibility of our signs.

Sign cleaning & Highway Maintenance Project two:
The Local Highway Authority invests millions of pounds into its highway maintenance programme in an effort to protect its asset and improve journeys for all road users. Whilst the end result is a nice smooth carriageway and freshly painted road markings we tend to neglect the highway signs.
The highways team have appointed a local specialist cleaning contractor to clean all the signs on the newly maintained routes.
The benefits of cleaning the signs are:
- Removes dust and dirt from the planning and resurfacing works at the end of the project.
- Improve reflectivity of the signs.
- Increases the lifespan of the vinyl.
- Aesthetically aligns with the newly resurfaced carriageway.
- Provides an audit of signs which need replacing.
